Verse 3 is found in chapter 20 of Revelation. An angel descends from heaven with the key to the abyss and a great chain, seizes the dragon, and locks him away for a thousand years. The text explicitly identifies the dragon as the ancient serpent, the Devil and Satan. The purpose of the imprisonment is to prevent him from deceiving the nations during that period. The passage forms the basis for various Christian interpretations of the millennium, so the text should be distinguished from later systematic elaborations.
