Verse 3 is found in chapter 21 of Revelation. John sees a new heaven and a new earth because the first heaven and the first earth have passed away, and the sea is no more. The new Jerusalem descends from heaven like a bride prepared for her husband. A voice declares that God’s tabernacle is with humanity: he will dwell with them, wipe away every tear, and remove death, mourning, crying, and pain. Christian hope is thus presented not simply as escape from creation, but as renewal and the definitive presence of God with his people.
