And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

Verse 8 is found in chapter 4 of Revelation. Around the throne appear twenty-four elders and four living creatures. The elders’ crowns and their position around the throne underscore a heavenly court scene, but their function culminates in worship, not autonomy. The four living creatures evoke creatures associated with the visions of Ezekiel and Isaiah and continually proclaim God’s holiness. The eyes express vigilance and perception, while the six wings recall the language of Isaiah 6. Heavenly worship establishes the theological framework for interpreting the events that follow.
