Verse 4 is found in chapter 1 of Ruth. Naomi’s sons take Moabite women, Orpah and Ruth, as wives. The marriages introduce a family relationship between Israel and Moab that will later become decisive. Ruth still appears simply as a foreign woman, but her presence in Naomi’s family prepares the development of a faithfulness that will ultimately become more significant than her ethnic origin.
