So David stayed his servants with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. But Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.

Verse 7 is found in chapter 24 of 1 Samuel. David finds himself in an unexpectedly favorable position when Saul enters the cave where he and his men are hiding. David’s men interpret the situation as an opportunity granted by God to eliminate their enemy, but David refuses to kill the Lord’s anointed. Merely cutting the edge of Saul’s robe later troubles him. The episode establishes a fundamental distinction between having an opportunity for power and having moral authorization to use it. David chooses not to violently accelerate the fulfillment of the promise.
