Verse 8 is found in chapter 31 of 1 Samuel. The Philistines find the bodies of Saul and his sons, publicly display them, and place their weapons in the temples of their gods. The inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead remember that Saul had delivered them at the beginning of his reign and courageously recover and bury their bodies. The book therefore ends with a mixture of defeat and honor. Saul dies as a rejected king, but the memory of one of his first acts of deliverance remains. The burial performed by Jabesh also anticipates the dignified treatment David will later give Saul and Jonathan.
