Thus Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but slew his son. And when he died, he said, The LORD look upon it, and require it.

Verse 22 is found in chapter 24 of 2 Chronicles. After Jehoiada’s death, Judah’s leaders abandon the Lord and serve idols. Zechariah, son of Jehoiada, denounces the transgression and is killed by the king’s order. The contrast with Joash’s earlier faithfulness is radical and shows how excessive dependence on a human leader does not guarantee permanent faithfulness to God.
