How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?

Verse 24 is found in chapter 18 of 2 Kings. Sennacherib sends the Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem. His speech seeks to destroy the people’s confidence: he questions Judah’s military ability, ridicules trust in Egypt, and presents the Assyrian campaign as supported by God himself. The rhetoric is carefully constructed to make the inhabitants believe resistance is useless. The Rabshakeh even uses Israelite religious concepts to legitimize the invasion. The scene raises a central conflict: can an empire’s word conquer the people’s confidence before its armies conquer the city?

E come faresti tu voltar faccia all’uno de’ capitani d’infra i minimi servitori del mio signore? ma tu ti sei confidato nell’Egitto per de’ carri, e della gente a cavallo.
