Verse 20 is found in chapter 23 of 2 Kings. Josiah undertakes an extensive purge of idolatrous worship. He removes objects dedicated to Baal and Asherah, eliminates illegitimate priests, desecrates worship sites, and destroys the altar at Bethel associated with Jeroboam’s sin. He also confronts practices involving child sacrifice and other forms of worship introduced into Judah. The reform has an exceptional geographic and religious scope. The objective is not simply to improve existing worship, but to remove structures the narrator considers incompatible with exclusive worship of the Lord. The destruction of Bethel directly connects Josiah’s reform with the ancient history of the northern kingdom.
