And the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the keepers of the door, to bring forth out of the temple of the LORD all the vessels that were made for Baal, and for the grove, and for all the host of heaven: and he burned them without Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes of them unto Bethel.

Verse 4 is found in chapter 23 of 2 Kings. Josiah undertakes an extensive purge of idolatrous worship. He removes objects dedicated to Baal and Asherah, eliminates illegitimate priests, desecrates worship sites, and destroys the altar at Bethel associated with Jeroboam’s sin. He also confronts practices involving child sacrifice and other forms of worship introduced into Judah. The reform has an exceptional geographic and religious scope. The objective is not simply to improve existing worship, but to remove structures the narrator considers incompatible with exclusive worship of the Lord. The destruction of Bethel directly connects Josiah’s reform with the ancient history of the northern kingdom.
