Verse 21 is found in chapter 16 of 2 Samuel. Absalom enters Jerusalem accompanied by Hushai, who pretends to support him. Ahithophel advises Absalom to take David’s concubines left behind, publicly fulfilling the word announced by Nathan concerning the consequences of David’s sin. The act also has a political dimension because it communicates that Absalom has assumed royal authority. The scene demonstrates how the family crisis announced after Bathsheba progressively becomes a national crisis.
