Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even fourscore years old: and he had provided the king of sustenance while he lay at Mahanaim; for he was a very great man.

Verse 32 is found in chapter 19 of 2 Samuel. Barzillai, an elderly man from Gilead, accompanies the king during his return, and David offers him a place in Jerusalem. Barzillai prefers to return to his land and sends Chimham in his place. The episode is a small scene of gratitude and reciprocity within a narrative dominated by wars and betrayals. David publicly recognizes the kindness of those who helped him during his exile and wants that loyalty to continue at court.
