Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith the LORD, Shalt thou build me an house for me to dwell in?

Verse 5 is found in chapter 7 of 2 Samuel. God corrects David’s proposal through Nathan and reminds him that he had never required a permanent house during previous generations. Instead of allowing David to build a house for God, the Lord announces that he will build a house for David, understood primarily as a dynasty. The play on house as building and house as lineage forms the theological center of the promise. God takes the initiative and establishes the future stability of David’s house.
