Verse 8 is found in chapter 1 of Daniel. Daniel’s decision not to defile himself with the king’s food and wine introduces the protagonist’s first explicit act of resistance. The verb associated with defilement connects the scene with the biblical concern for holiness and the identity of God’s people. Daniel does not reject all participation in imperial society, but he establishes a boundary when a practice threatens his religious faithfulness.
