Thou shalt not pervert the judgment of the stranger, nor of the fatherless; nor take a widow's raiment to pledge:

Verse 17 is found in chapter 24 of Deuteronomy. A creditor must not enter a debtor’s house to take a pledge, and certain garments must be returned before nightfall. Withholding a laborer’s wages is also prohibited, and part of the harvest must be left for foreigners, orphans, and widows. Economic legislation seeks to limit the creditor’s power and turn the memory of slavery in Egypt into a foundation for solidarity.
