When thou gatherest the grapes of thy vineyard, thou shalt not glean it afterward: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow.

Verse 21 is found in chapter 24 of Deuteronomy. A creditor must not enter a debtor’s house to take a pledge, and certain garments must be returned before nightfall. Withholding a laborer’s wages is also prohibited, and part of the harvest must be left for foreigners, orphans, and widows. Economic legislation seeks to limit the creditor’s power and turn the memory of slavery in Egypt into a foundation for solidarity.
