Verse 10 is found in chapter 5 of Ezra. The Jewish leaders explain that the temple had been built by an ancient king of Israel and later destroyed because of the people’s unfaithfulness. Their response interprets the exile theologically: Jerusalem’s destruction was not presented as God’s final defeat, but as a consequence of Israel’s sin. The return and reconstruction therefore appear as a new stage after judgment.
