Verse 2 is found in chapter 4 of Job. Eliphaz begins the first cycle of speeches by appealing to experience and to an idea of retributive justice. He suggests that those who sow evil reap calamity and that destruction reaches the wicked. Although he recognizes ancient wisdom concerning divine justice, his argument begins reducing Job’s suffering to an overly simple scheme.
