Verse 11 is found in chapter 1 of Joshua. After receiving the divine commission, Joshua turns the promise into concrete instructions for the people. The officers must prepare provisions and announce the crossing of the Jordan, while the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh remember their commitment to help their brothers. Israel’s unity is thus connected to the conquest: although some tribes already possess territory east of the Jordan, they participate in the collective responsibility of receiving the promised inheritance.
