Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.

Verse 6 is found in chapter 1 of Joshua. The opening of Joshua begins immediately after the death of Moses and presents the transition of leadership within the covenant story. God does not give Joshua an entirely new mission, but the responsibility of leading the people into the land He had already promised to the patriarchs and Moses. The repetition of "be strong and courageous" connects the success of the mission with faithfulness to the divine word, not simply with military ability. Obedience to the law and trust in God’s presence appear from this point onward as inseparable conditions of Joshua’s leadership.
