There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon: all other they took in battle.

Verse 19 is found in chapter 11 of Joshua. The narrator summarizes the conquest of the region and states that Joshua took all that land according to what God had said to Moses. The war lasts a long time, and the Anakites are removed from several regions, although some remain in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod. Finally the land rests from war. This conclusion shows that the conquest was not instantaneous, but a prolonged process whose result is presented as the progressive fulfillment of the promise.
