And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into an harlot's house, named Rahab, and lodged there.

Verse 1 is found in chapter 2 of Joshua. The sending of the spies to Jericho introduces a scene in which military information is subordinated to providential action. Rahab recognizes that the God of Israel has caused fear among the inhabitants of Canaan and decides to protect the messengers. Her statement shows that knowledge of God’s works had already reached the surrounding peoples. The narrative also emphasizes that Rahab’s faith is expressed through a concrete decision to side with the God of Israel and risk herself to protect His messengers.
