Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever the LORD our God shall drive out from before us, them will we possess.

Verse 24 is found in chapter 11 of Judges. Jephthah concludes that the Lord gave Israel the land of Sihon and asks why Ammon seeks to recover it after three hundred years. He also states that each people possesses what its god gives them, while Israel possesses its land because the Lord gave it to them. The Ammonite king does not answer the argument. War is therefore presented as the result of a territorial claim that could not be resolved through negotiation.
