Verse 37 is found in chapter 11 of Judges. Jephthah’s only daughter comes out to greet him with tambourines and dancing, turning the victory into personal tragedy. Jephthah laments his vow, and his daughter agrees to submit to what was promised, asking for two months to mourn her virginity with her companions. The passage is one of the book’s most morally complex episodes and does not explicitly present the sacrifice as an institution approved by the law. The narrative shows the destructive consequences of a rash vow and the depth of the religious deterioration of the period.
