Verse 30 is found in chapter 22 of Numbers. The angel of God stands in Balaam’s path, and the donkey perceives the danger before its master. After God opens Balaam’s eyes, he understands the heavenly opposition. The scene functions with narrative irony: the prophet who intends to speak for God needs God to allow him to see and understand. The experience prepares Balaam to submit his words to the divine command.
