Verse 53 is found in chapter 1 of 1 Kings. Adonijah’s guests disperse, and he seeks refuge beside the altar. Solomon refrains from executing him immediately and gives him an opportunity to demonstrate his future conduct. The new king’s mercy does not mean ignoring the rebellion, but establishing a condition for preserving his life. The episode presents Solomon beginning his reign through a combination of authority and clemency.
