Verse 1 is found in chapter 10 of 1 Samuel. Samuel anoints Saul and gives him a series of signs that will confirm his selection. The private anointing establishes a relationship between the future king and God’s purpose before any public recognition. The signs involving the donkeys, the men carrying provisions, and the prophets show ordinary and religious events converging to confirm the received word. The command to wait seven days at Gilgal also introduces an obedience test that will be especially significant in light of Saul’s later failure.
