Verse 12 is found in chapter 16 of 2 Kings. Ahaz visits Damascus and is impressed by an altar. He sends the priest Uriah a model of the altar and orders the worship of Jerusalem’s temple to be modified according to that pattern. The scene is significant because the king does not merely adopt a foreign practice personally: he reorganizes the official worship of the temple. The traditional bronze altar is displaced and subordinated to the new design. Religious authority is inverted: the king acts as though he can redesign worship according to his political and cultural preferences.
