And Pharaohnechoh made Eliakim the son of Josiah king in the room of Josiah his father, and turned his name to Jehoiakim, and took Jehoahaz away: and he came to Egypt, and died there.

Verse 34 is found in chapter 23 of 2 Kings. Jehoahaz reigns briefly and is taken to Egypt by Pharaoh Neco. Jehoiakim is then placed on the throne and becomes subject to Egyptian tribute. Both kings receive negative evaluations. The contrast with Josiah is immediate: after the reformer’s death, Judah quickly enters a period of international dependence and spiritual decline. The succession demonstrates the fragility of a reform when it fails to permanently transform the orientation of the entire society. Foreign policy also changes rapidly, preparing the future confrontation between Egypt and Babylon.
