In his days Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up, and Jehoiakim became his servant three years: then he turned and rebelled against him.

Verse 1 is found in chapter 24 of 2 Kings. Jehoiakim initially submits to Nebuchadnezzar and later rebels. As a result, Judah begins suffering raids from various peoples. The narrator interprets these calamities in light of the Lord’s word against Judah, especially because of the accumulated sins during Manasseh’s reign. Political history thus becomes the visible setting of a judgment already announced theologically. The chapter indicates that despite long divine patience, a point arrives when the accumulated consequences of sin produce an irreversible crisis.
