Verse 3 is found in chapter 25 of 2 Kings. Nebuchadnezzar lays siege to Jerusalem during Zedekiah’s reign. The city remains under siege until the famine becomes extreme and a breach is finally made. Zedekiah attempts to escape but is captured. His sons are executed before him, and he is then blinded and taken to Babylon. The account represents the complete collapse of Judah’s political power. The king, who was supposed to represent the continuity of the Davidic monarchy, ends as a prisoner. The scene brutally shows the historical result of the long process of rebellion and judgment announced by the prophets.
