The sleep of a labouring man is sweet, whether he eat little or much: but the abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep.

Verse 12 is found in chapter 5 of Ecclesiastes. Qohelet observes systems of economic oppression and notes that the existence of successive authorities does not necessarily eliminate injustice. He also shows the paradox of one who loves money: the more he possesses, the more people consume his wealth. The worker may sleep peacefully, while the rich person may lose sleep worrying about his riches. Material abundance does not guarantee inner security or satisfaction.
