Verse 10 is found in chapter 7 of Hosea. Ephraim is described as a cake not turned: cooked on one side and raw on the other. The image expresses imbalance and uselessness and is connected with its mixture of identities and alliances. Israel has mixed itself with other peoples and lost its ability to live according to its covenant identity. Despite everything, its pride prevents it from recognizing its decline.
