Verse 12 is found in chapter 20 of Job. Zophar uses the image of sweet food becoming poison to represent pleasure obtained through wickedness. The prosperity of the wicked is presented as temporary and deceptive. The speech therefore develops a moral theology of consequences, while still failing to resolve the difference between a general truth and its application to Job’s case.
