Verse 1 is found in chapter 11 of Joshua. Jabin, king of Hazor, gathers a northern coalition much larger than the previous ones. God again commands Joshua not to fear and promises to deliver the enemies into his hands. The battle takes place near the waters of Merom, where Israel launches a surprise attack. The destruction of the horses and chariots reflects the instructions received and shows that Israel must not depend on the military technology of the great Canaanite powers to secure the territorial promise.
