Verse 30 is found in chapter 11 of Judges. The Spirit of the Lord comes upon Jephthah, and he marches against the Ammonites. Before fighting, he makes a vow promising to give the Lord whatever comes out of his house first if he receives victory. God delivers the Ammonites into his hands, and Jephthah conquers a large territory. The text deliberately maintains the tension between the Spirit’s action and the rash vow that follows.
