And he said, Wherefore doth my lord thus pursue after his servant? for what have I done? or what evil is in mine hand?

Verse 18 is found in chapter 26 of 1 Samuel. From a safe distance, David confronts Saul and demonstrates that once again he could have killed him. David accuses those around the king of failing to protect him properly, but avoids turning the situation into an execution. He also asks why Saul is pursuing someone who poses no legitimate threat. David’s defense combines respect for the king with a denunciation of unjust persecution. The future ruler leaves the outcome to God.

Und sprach weiter: Warum verfolgt mein Herr also seinen Knecht? Was habe ich getan? und was Übels ist in meiner Hand?
¿qué he hecho? ¿qué mal hay en mi mano?
Añadió: «¿Por qué persigue mi señor a su servidor? ¿Qué he hecho?
