But Amaziah would not hear. Therefore Jehoash king of Israel went up; and he and Amaziah king of Judah looked one another in the face at Bethshemesh, which belongeth to Judah.

Verse 11 is found in chapter 14 of 2 Kings. Amaziah challenges Joash of Israel, using language of pride and provocation that Joash answers with a parable about the thistle and the cedar. Amaziah persists, and the two kings confront one another. Judah is defeated, and Jerusalem suffers political humiliation with part of the wall demolished and treasures plundered. The episode shows the danger of interpreting a previous victory as a guarantee of permanent superiority. The narrative also uses irony: a simple parable had warned about Amaziah’s limits, but his ambition led him to ignore it.
