Verse 22 is found in chapter 14 of 2 Kings. The text concludes Joash’s reign and begins to highlight Jeroboam II. Although Jeroboam will be negatively evaluated for continuing the sins of Jeroboam I, God allows a significant territorial recovery. The narrator explains this recovery through the Lord’s compassion toward Israel because he had seen the people’s extreme affliction. This statement is important: territorial prosperity is not necessarily presented as a reward for religious faithfulness. God can show mercy to a people that remains spiritually misguided.
