Verse 5 is found in chapter 1 of 2 Samuel. David receives news in Ziklag of the deaths of Saul and Jonathan. The Amalekite messenger attempts to present himself as directly involved in Saul’s death, probably hoping for a reward for eliminating David’s rival. From the beginning, the scene establishes that David does not interpret Saul’s death as an opportunity for revenge or for seizing the throne through violence. The future king responds to the news with respect for the dignity of the Lord’s anointed.
