And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

Verse 12 is found in chapter 22 of Revelation. Jesus announces again that he is coming soon and that he brings his reward to repay each person according to their work. He presents himself as the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. The language unites judgment, reward, and eternity. Works do not appear as a way of earning independent merit before God, but as what reveals each person’s response to the revelation received. Christ’s eternal identity guarantees that the judge who comes is the same Lord who has spoken from the beginning of the book.
