And he settled his countenance stedfastly, until he was ashamed: and the man of God wept.

Verse 11 is found in chapter 8 of 2 Kings. Elisha arrives in Damascus and announces to Hazael that he will become king of Syria. Hazael asks about Ben-hadad’s recovery, but the prophet perceives that the future king will inflict terrible violence upon Israel. The scene combines revelation and sorrow: knowing an event beforehand does not mean morally approving the human actions that will bring it about. Hazael eventually acts deceitfully and kills his master. The episode prepares Syria’s role as an instrument of pressure against Israel and again shows that the political history of the kingdom lies within the horizon of the prophetic word.
