Verse 11 is found in chapter 1 of 2 Samuel. David and his men tear their clothes and fast upon hearing of the deaths of Saul and Jonathan. David then orders the Amalekite who claims to have killed Saul to be executed. The decision is significant because David had previously had opportunities to kill Saul and had rejected them. The account therefore presents a conception of kingship in which access to the throne must not be built upon the murder of the previous king.
