Verse 42 is found in chapter 10 of Joshua. The summary of the southern campaign states that Joshua conquered the entire hill country, the Negev, the lowlands, and the slopes, from Kadesh-barnea to Gaza. The narrator states that the Lord fought for Israel and that Joshua returned to Gilgal. This formula summarizes an entire stage of the conquest and provides its theological interpretation: territorial expansion is presented as the result of divine action accompanied by Joshua’s obedience.
